The Garden We Kept

We once kept a garden
full of bright red roses
that swelled with pride,
and fluffy dandelions
that danced with delight,
filling the air with the scent
of innocence and wonder.
Our love grew
and blossomed
like the flowers of spring
until one day,
the weeds took over
and the flowers died,
all but a single dandelion
a glimpse of what once was
memories of a time passed
but never forgotten.
What went wrong?
Was it I who left it to die,
or were we simply on
borrowed land,
and this garden was never ours
to keep?
