My Father’s Pain

Sadness clings to me
like a heavy weight
on my chest.
I can’t seem to shake off
the groans
that escape your lips
each time you hold on
for yet another day.
In a way,
your sadness is my sadness
and your pain is my pain.
And it came to me that I
will never know loss
as deeply as the day
I see you go.
